Canada took a big step toward autonomy during the 20s. While the U.S. had turned to armed revolution to gain their independence from Britain, Canada took a whole different path. Canada gained autonomy by taking steady peaceful steps during and after the war.

Canada had gained a new sense of national maturity because of Canada's major contributions to the war - supplies, soldiers and victories. After the war, Canada was given the right to sign the Treaty of Versailles on it's own. They also joined the League of Nations as a separate nation from Britain. While we were still a Dominion with the British Empire, the feelings of Nationalism were definitely in bloom!

When WML Mackenzie King became Prime Minister in 1921, he was determined to push for Canadian autonomy. A series of events happened in the next few years that gave him the opportunities he needed.
